Dedicated to the memory of Jack

This site is a tribute to Jack, who was born in Bolton on February 18, 1926.

John Baxendale of Highliffe, known affectionately as Jack, passed away peacefully at home on 2nd April 2020, aged 94.  He was the son of James and Florence Baxendale from Bolton in Lancashire. Devoted husband to Joan, loving father to Catherine, Stephen, Pauline, Sue and father-in-law to Andrew and Suzie.  Much loved grandfather to Andrew, Annie, Michael, Sam, Jessica and Emma and great grandfather to Ivy-Rae.

Jack had a long and fulfilled life, serving in the Army and RAF during the War, he had successful career in sales and marketing and a wholesale business specialising in 'in car entertainment'.  He enjoyed all sports including rugby and football but especially squash & tennis playing at county level in his youth and further pursued tennis at Wimbledon where he participated as a linesman and umpiring for many well-known players for many years.

Golf was another of his favourite past times where he played at both Looe GC as well as Highcliffe Castle GC in the latter years.  He founded one of the senior’s section events at Highcliffe Castle and contributed the Jackson trophy for members to compete against.  Quite remarkably, Jack obtained a ’hole in one’ whilst in his eighties!

Always active Jack and Joan completed the South West Way as well as the Cornish Coastal path for the 2nd time after he was recovering from cancer in Looe, Cornwall when he was 78 which was in aid of the doctors and nurses in the Derriford hospital in Plymouth after his illness.

Jack had huge charm and a witty disposition. When frailty and illness took away physical activity, he started a family WhatsApp group, and was always on his smartphone, keeping family amused and united across the world from Canada to Australia with his witty poems often to his grandchildren in Canada who took after him in a variety of sporty pursuits.

Jack was devoted to his wife and his four children of which Jack and Joan were very proud.  Jack and Joan’s faith has always been of utmost importance to them and the work they did for the church including creating and maintaining the Grotto at the local church in Highcliffe.

Jack is much loved and will always be remembered.
