1942 Clerk, Cashier

Every night, the cheques and cash, had to balance to the penny with the entry totals in the accounts register, mostly done with pen and ink helped by a mechanical adding machine.

One of my jobs weekly was to go to the Post Office accompanied by a colleague and collect several thousand pounds in notes which was the pay for the US troops which were stationed at a local camp. The money was in a bag I carried with a strap wrapped round my waist. About an hour later, an armoured vehicle with mounted, submachine gun, and GI soldiers with loaded rifles in shop doorways facing the bank, - collected the same money to take back to camp.
